Create-A-Research-Space (CARS) Pattern In Introduction Section of Academic Writing: Empirical Studies And The Pedagogical Implication

Katharina Rustipa - Nama Orang; Elisabeth Oseanita Pukan - Nama Orang;

In this global era, proficiency in English academic writing is getting more important for the global scientific community since English is the language of choice for many international scientific journals. However, empirical studies revealed that most EFL undergraduate, graduate students found it difficult to perform academic writing. Their problems mostly derived from the lack of awareness and literacy of qualified academic writing characteristics such as the rhetorical structure and linguistic features. Without neglecting the other sections, Introduction section of academic writing is the most crucial part in academic writing because it provides the rationale for the research paper, to attract interest in the topic, and hence the readers. To write successful Introduction section of academic writing, Swales and Feak (2012) promoted Create-a-Research-Space (CARS) pattern/ rhetorical structure. This book explains (1) how to produce Introduction section of academic writing text using Create-a-Research-Space (CARS) pattern, (2) how to write Problem statement as the most crucial element of Introduction section. Each of which is supplemented with research results of empirical studies and the pedagogical implications. Based on the author’s research findings, Critical Genre-Based Model for Teaching Introduction, Problem Statements is proposed and presented in this book. This is useful for the teachers and the students. Alternative methods to investigate Introduction section, Problem Statement are shared in this book. Examples of research data are also shared. Hopefully, they are beneficial for the researchers who want to do similar study.
